Two mini excavators on residential driveway for landscaping work

How to Choose the Right Mini Excavator for Your Landscaping Project

Choosing the right mini excavator can be more complicated than you might expect.

For landscaping projects, you may need to dig trenches, remove stumps, plant trees, prepare the ground, or excavate for patios, fences, and drainage systems. Different jobs can have very different requirements when it comes to machine size, digging depth, overall width, and transportation.

The right excavator should not only handle the work you need to do, but also fit your job site, transportation setup, and budget.

So, where should you start? Let’s break it down. 👇

1. Start by Thinking About What You’ll Use the Excavator For

This is one of the first things to consider when choosing a mini excavator.

For residential and landscaping projects, a mini excavator can be used for:

  • Digging drainage trenches
  • Installing irrigation lines
  • Digging holes for trees and plants
  • Removing stumps and roots
  • Preparing gardens and landscaped areas
  • Excavating for fences, patios, and other projects
  • Moving soil, gravel, and other materials
  • Preparing and leveling the ground
  • Clearing weeds, brush, and other obstacles

Different jobs require different things from a machine.

For example, if most of your work involves digging drainage trenches in a residential backyard, whether the machine can access the work area and whether it has enough digging depth may be more important than having the highest engine power.

On the other hand, if you regularly need to remove stumps or work with harder ground, digging performance and attachment compatibility may matter more. So, start with the work you need to do—not with the machine model.

2. Choose the Right Size Instead of Simply Going Bigger

Mini excavators are generally available in different size and weight classes. But there’s one thing that’s easy to overlook:The weight class represented by a model number does not necessarily equal the machine’s actual operating weight.

For example, in our product lineup, the CZ-10 has an operating weight of 0.68 tons, the CZ-16W has an operating weight of 0.93 tons, while the CZ-25W has an operating weight of 1.85 tons.

So, when comparing different mini excavators, don't look at the number in the model name alone.

It’s more useful to look at the actual specifications, including:

  • Operating weight
  • Overall width
  • Maximum digging depth
  • Maximum digging radius
  • Maximum dumping height
  • Engine power
  • Bucket capacity

These specifications can give you a much clearer idea of whether a machine is a good fit for your project.

2.1 Working in a Residential Area? Machine Width Matters

For landscaping projects, whether a machine can actually reach the work area can sometimes be more important than how much digging power it has.Even if a larger excavator offers greater digging depth and more engine power, it won't be much help if it can't fit through your gate or into your backyard.

Before buying, take a moment to measure:

  • Garden gate width
  • The space between your house and fence
  • Side-yard access
  • Garage entrances
  • Any other areas that could limit machine access

For example, some of our mini excavators have undercarriage widths ranging from around 920 mm to 1,100 mm, while larger models can reach 1,200 mm, 1,350 mm, or even 1,300 mm.If your job site has limited space, a more compact machine can make things much easier.

Measure the entrance first, then choose the machine. 📏It’s a small step, but an important one.

2.2 Consider How Deep You Need to Dig

Different landscaping projects have different digging-depth requirements.

  • Planting trees → Usually doesn't require extremely deep excavation.
  • Irrigation projects → Need enough digging depth for the required pipe installation.
  • Drainage trenches → May require greater digging depth.
  • Foundation or other site preparation → May require a greater overall working range.

So, when choosing an excavator, start by asking yourself:“How deep do I actually need to dig?”

Depending on the model, our mini excavators offer maximum digging depths ranging from approximately 1,600 mm to 2,320 mm.

For example:

  • CZ-10-1: Maximum digging depth — 1,600 mm
  • CZ-10-2: 1,670 mm
  • CZ-13W: 1,750 mm
  • CZ-16W: 2,139 mm
  • CZ-18W: 2,150 mm
  • CZ-25W: 2,260 mm
  • CZ-35W: 2,320 mm

Of course, a machine’s maximum digging depth doesn’t mean you’ll need to dig that deep for every job.Choose based on the actual requirements of your project.

2.3 Don’t Just Look at Digging Depth—Consider the Working Range Too

An excavator doesn’t just dig downward. When you're working on a real job site, you also need to think about:How far can it reach? How high can it lift? And where can it dump the material?

That’s where these specifications become important:

  • Maximum digging radius
  • Maximum digging height
  • Maximum dumping height

For example, the CZ-16W has a maximum digging radius of 3,570 mm, a maximum digging height of 2,716 mm, and a maximum dumping height of 1,920 mm.

If you need to load excavated soil into a trailer, hopper, or another location, these specifications are worth paying attention to as well.

3. Consider Machine Weight and Transportation 🚚

If you’re not using your excavator at the same job site every day, transportation is another very practical consideration. Before buying, ask yourself:

  • What is the machine’s actual operating weight?
  • Can your trailer handle the weight?
  • Is your vehicle suitable for towing?
  • How easy is it to load and unload the machine?
  • Will you need to move it between different job sites frequently?

Our product lineup has operating weights ranging from 0.64 tons to 2.36 tons. That means different models can have very different transportation requirements.

For homeowners and landscapers who regularly work on residential projects, a mini excavator that is easy to transport can sometimes be more practical than a larger machine.

4. Engine Power Isn’t the Only Specification That Matters

When people look at engine specifications, their first thought might be:“More power means a better machine, right?”

Not necessarily.

Engine power is certainly important, but for landscaping projects, it should be considered together with:

  • Operating weight
  • Maximum digging depth
  • Maximum digging radius
  • Bucket capacity
  • Hydraulic system
  • Machine dimensions

For example, our smaller models use 8.5 kW / 11.4 HP engines, while larger models use 11.8 kW / 15.82 HP or 15.2 kW / 20.38 HP power configurations.

If your main jobs involve residential landscaping, drainage trenches, and general earthmoving, you may not need the highest-powered machine available.Choose the power that matches your work—not simply the biggest number.

5. Don’t Forget About Bucket Capacity and Attachments 🛠️

A mini excavator’s performance isn’t just about the machine itself. The attachments you use can also make a big difference.

For example, different buckets can be suited to different jobs:

  • Narrow bucket → Trenches and tighter digging areas
  • Standard bucket → General digging
  • Wide bucket → Grading and working across wider areas
  • Other attachments → Choose based on your specific project

Depending on the model, our mini excavators offer bucket capacities ranging from approximately 0.018 m³ to 0.07 m³.

If you mainly work on drainage trenches or utility lines, pay close attention to digging depth and bucket configuration. If your work involves more land preparation and landscaping, you may also want to consider attachments designed for grading and material handling.

Choose Based on Your Working Environment, Not Just the Spec Sheet

The same machine can feel very different depending on where you’re using it.

🏡 Small Residential Backyards
Focus on:

  • Overall width
  • Operating weight
  • Maneuverability
  • Digging depth
  • Ease of transportation

💧 Drainage and Irrigation Projects
Focus on:

  • Maximum digging depth
  • Maximum digging radius
  • Bucket configuration
  • Machine dimensions

🌳 Larger Landscaping Projects
You may want to pay more attention to:

  • Greater working range
  • Greater working height
  • Larger bucket capacity
  • More engine power
  • Greater operating weight

The key is to match the machine to the environment and the work—not simply choose the largest model.

A Simple Mini Excavator Selection Checklist ✅

Still not sure which model to choose?Start by answering these six questions:

  • ① What kind of work am I doing?
Digging trenches, planting trees, removing stumps, or preparing the ground?
  • ② How deep do I need to dig?
Determine the actual digging depth your project requires, then compare it with the machine’s maximum digging depth.
  • ③ How wide is my access point?
Measure gates, fences, and side-yard access before buying. You don’t want to bring your new excavator home only to find out it can’t reach the work area.
  • ④ How will I transport the machine?
Check the machine’s actual operating weight and make sure your trailer and vehicle are suitable.
  • ⑤ How much working range do I need?
Don’t just look at digging depth. Check the maximum digging radius, digging height, and dumping height too.
  • ⑥ Which attachments do I actually need?
Choose buckets and other attachments based on your actual work, rather than buying extra equipment simply because it’s available.

Final Thoughts: Choose the Machine That Fits Your Work

There’s no single mini excavator that’s right for everyone. For someone mainly working in a residential backyard, compact dimensions, lower operating weight, and sufficient digging depth may be more important.

For larger landscaping projects, greater working range, more engine power, and larger bucket capacity may become more important.

Before you buy, start by identifying the work you need to do, measure your available working space, and then compare the machine specifications that actually matter.Don’t look at the model number alone, and don’t focus only on engine power.

When you consider operating weight, machine dimensions, digging depth, working range, and transportation requirements together, you’ll have a much clearer idea of which mini excavator fits your landscaping project. 🌱
